STUDENT CHOREOGRAPHIC COMPETITION

Developing an autonomous dancer is a key aspect of the YDA curriculum With this in mind, students learn the art of choreography and the process that choreographers take from initial idea to finished piece. In the May intensive students are given the opportunity to create their own work which they are encouraged to show to a panel of teachers for submission into the YDA Summer Showcase.

AWARDS
This year YDA will be giving out the following awards for student choreography:
- 1 x ‘Overall Winner’ picked from out of all programmes whose choreography will then be performed in the Swindon Dance VIP Event ‘Dancing Pathways’ on Monday 15th July 2012 and the YDA Summer Showcase on 13th and 14th July
- 3 x ‘Programme Winners’ (i.e. 1 from Exeter contemporary programme, 1 from Swindon contemporary programme, 1 from Swindon urban programme) whose choreography will be performed in the YDA Summer Showcase on 13th & 14th July
- 3 x ‘Runner Up’s picked across the board of the YDA programmes
- Special mentions
Students will show their choreography to the YDA panel on Sunday 8th June (Exeter Contemporary Programme) Saturday 15th June (Swindon Contemporary Programme) and Sunday 15th June (Swindon Urban Programme). The winners will be announced shortly afterwards.
RULES
- Students are to present choreographically completed pieces that they wish to put forward as an entry into the YDA summer showcase 2013.
- Students are required to present a piece in the style of their choice, music, length of piece, number of dancers and choreographic intent all of their own choice.
- Each piece is to be performed to the panel on specified date. Dancers are to be in costume and music edited onto a CD.
- The choreographer must have a title for their piece and be able to answer any panel questions regarding their stimulus, intent and ideas behind their piece.
- Not all pieces will be able to go into the summer show-case. All pieces will be filmed and any pieces not being performed in the show will be shown on the TV on the landing before the show and during the interval.
- Students will show their choreography to the YDA panel on Sunday 8th June (Exeter Contemporary Programme) Saturday 15th June (Swindon Contemporary Programme) and Sunday 15th June (Swindon Urban Programme). The winners will be announced shortly afterwards.
